There's no way you can say Canada's interest in this tournament is poor when 8000 people came out to watch Latvia vs. Slovenia, and TSN's ratings for the Finals were higher than any game in Round 3 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
You're right about the time differentials though, but that can't be helped unless you reverse the rotation of the Earth.
My point is being missed I think....
Cuemaster said games are played here in the afternoon because we did not pay enough to have the game in our prime time claiming that we'd have to paid tons more to have the schedule suit us....
I said all monies the IIHF gets is guaranteed and it is up to organizing committee's to get it back.
Europe hosts we watch games 4am to 9am in the morning
We host and Europe watches in the late evening
Any business is about growth & new markets is a sure way to achieve this.
If the IIHF wants to grow NA is the obvious avenue....
Having Canada host and then making the games inaccessible is NOT a good business plan.....
Hockey Canada tried to err on the side of caution this time, they saw the response and next time they will be far more aggressive with this event IMO
We have never hosted the IHWC in NA yet on our 1st attempt we had the third highest gate....
So I don't understand why some of you think this wasn't popular here?
Next time we host, and we will, the games will be in larger arena's than the Halifax rink and all records will fall...IMO

As far as I know IHWC only has pockets of high TV audiences... Sure Finland is a big market % wise but hardly a huge market $$ wise! The IIHF works like any other world body; they are guaranteed X amount of dollars upon awarding of the games it is then the organizing committee's job to sell everything from logo merchandise to TV broadcast rights to pay for the bills and maybe make a profit. We were close not to host the games because the Quebec Government wasn't willing to guarantee money should there be a shortfall.
So if Hockey Canada can't sell enough over here then I can see them changing schedules to accommodate Euro Broadcasters in order to make enough $$.... BUT according to Hockey Canada that was not the case! TV broadcast times were done with the Stanley Cup in mind, trying not to conflict with them. Certain games will be scheduled for a Euro audience but any elite game, will in future, be held in our prime time ....guaranteed!
Again the money the IIHF makes is guaranteed upon awarding of the IHWC... So We paid X amount regardless of TV rights... |
what i hear ,it is going like this ......iihf get money of tv-rights and big sponsors like skoda .....host federation got money for tickets and advertisement and other sales in games ....... and i dont think that Canadian audiense is enough to fill tv-rights money to iihf........ you need USA ,but they dont even show those games so that´s zero $ .......... plus Russian riseing economy bring new money to iihf ........... i dont realistic or sensible organice games in NA any other way they was this time

..... and this is what i said at first ....... if you like to schedule in primetime ,you have open your wallet to iihf .....case close

Wrong!
Canada's broadcasters pay's far more for broadcast rights than the US's counterparts.
The NHL's big issue is getting the NHL a better US TV deal...
Are you trying to tell me there is more money in Europe for Hockey than over here?
Is that why you have little stadiums and the IHWC is played mostly in empty arena's?
Hmmm....
The Memorial Cup is our Jr. Championship...
4 teams
average 250 000 spectators + every game on TV
If the IHWC becames an event that is here more than once in a hundred years Canada will be as rich a market for the IIHF as any....
We are the worlds only market where hockey is the #1 sport
time WILL prove me correct....I have no doubt
Ray Canuck, ok, info to think: this was the first time Canada hosted WC! FIRST TIME EVER!!! Final game... Less than 14000 spectators... Pepsi Coliseum contains 15000 seats! WHERE ARE THE RECORDS? WHERE ARE THE INTEREST? Take a look at the map of Russia! True fans travel from Moscow to Khabarovsk, lots of them, and thats just Superliga(our championship)! So what was that? "Nothing-to-watch" attitude or pure self-confidence? Tell me!
And I heard, that all WC games were shown in Canada on required payment channels! WHY??? You call such attitude an interest to WC?

when we talk about tv-rights ...i think so ......it´s hard to belive that Canadian tv-stations can pay as mutch that Finland ,Sweeden,Russia,Germany,Swiss and czech togather ..... if games show here 2-5 am our stations pay only dime for rights and all charges leave to Canadian people ........ NHL has to love that

That's BS!!! We had the third highest gate EVER in the IHWC even with bad start times! It was Hockey Canada's choice to schedule games the way they were!!!! Hockey Canada already admitted it was an error & that next time games will be in NA prime time!!! It had nothing to do with us not ponying up
|
....and what is BS in there ...... if hockey Canada is make desission to keep next games in prime time ...... they are also make a disission to reimburse tv-money to iihf ,they lose to europe tv-rights ...... BS ...i dont think so
|
Ray....i am not sure what you like to prove in this case ...... to me this case was only to prove that i didnt tell any BS ...... and later i can see you even admin that .... my point was/is that hockey Canada can hostle games and schedule in prime ,but that cost them a lot of money ....nothing else

I have ample experience in Broadcast Properties in the Sports and Entertainment area....I can assure you that the rights for this were prolly sold in advance years ago to major regional Euro networks ....that's why the broadcast times are set for Euro TV...don't forget that TSN and CBC as the major NHL rights holders for Prime Time Hockey broadcasts likely have temporal protection for competing leagues/events....that means they'd have to agree to a prime time broadcast against SC games from another event....not going to happen gents....not yet anyway....IHWC's best bet is to court CTV/SportsNet as partners if and when they intend to develop this tourney as a prime time performing property here....once every 100 years ain't going to cut it....nether is once every 6 or 7 years...can't build a big viewing base off that given the realities of slot allotments when its away....

13,200 is what they were touting as a sell out...haven't been there since 1997 so I don't know if the manifest has changed that much as it used to be over 15,000 ....dunno if they lost seats for tv prdn or whatever.....can't imagine why...it was sold out far in advance tho....

We do that. Our only major non-pay TV channels are not permitted to show sports over a certain percentage, and CBC already used up its quota with hockey. Most Canadians own cable (that is, a package of 15-45 channels that you get for a monthly fee) anyway. That's why TSN drew 1.5 million viewers for the Gold Medal Final.
TSN also offered free live streaming webcasts of all the games they broadcasted on their website to all Canadian IPs.
You know what, lets cut the crap.
Quebec Colisee Capacity: 15,399 (Wiki - not accurate for this tournament, but we'll use it for consistency's sake)
Halifax Metro Centre Capacity: 10,595
Number of Total Games: 54
Number of Games in Halifax: 25
Number of Games in Quebec: 29
Maximum Total Attendance: (15,399*29) + (10,595*25) = 711446
Total Attendance: 477040
Percentage Attendance: 67%
Khodynka Arena Capacity: 14,500
Mytishchi Arena Capacity: 9,000
Number of Total Games: 56
Number of Games in Khodynka: 32
Number of Games in Mytishchi: 24
Maximum Total Attendance: (14,500*32) + (9,000*24) = 680000
Total Attendance: 330708
Percentage Attendance: 49%
Yeah, Canada doesn't care. Of course.

Totally agree and this is the reason why.
Canada has the most interest and most amount of rabid hockey fans...if they market the games over here (and that will mean doing it more then once every century)........this tournament will become as big if not bigger then it always has been in Europe.
the fact that they had it here this time and Canada lost in a heart breaker pretty much assures Canada (both the Hockey organization of the country and the fans) will demand it come back and when it does it will be the best attended Tournament in IIHF world championship history.
and when Canada revenges this loss in grand thrilling style i suspect it will become another traditional "must see" tournament much like the world juniors.
And then the IIHF will want to have it over here every other year because this is where the most money will be made off it for them.
as much as this was a great loss for us............it may well turn out to be the end of the Europeans pre-eminence as being the traditional host of this tournament.
Don't be surprised if that happens!!
it could very well become 'our tournament" very quickly.
because if this tournament and the way it went down makes Canada get a burr in their saddle (much like Piestany did for the world juniors) .................we'll support it better then anyone.
And that will be the end of it being held in Europe exclusively and the majority of the time.
Fasells not a complete fool, he's already actually seen the potential and has made his remarks that we are going to get it again and in the not too far future.
because he knows it's true what ray was saying.................we're the number one hockey market because we're the only country where hockey is more popular then any other sport.
Honestly....................i can see this happening very easily.
You all may have to start preparing to get up very early in the morning to watch hockey games for this tournament!!
