I don't understand all the Russians who can't learn the difference between Latvia and Lithuania ihwcforums/cuss.gif Labas dienas is Lithuanian, Labdien is Latvian ihwcforums/angryfire.gif

Sorry, I didn't want to upset you and your country. Anyway, the sense is correct, "Good afternoon!", is it?

What's your nickname for Canada?

We often call team Canada like yourselves: "Кленовые Листья" ("Klenovye Listya" - "Maple Leaves") or just Canucks (in forum) smile.gif

I've never heard anyone call Canada "Nikkarit".

Well .....that case ...... i guess only we "old farts" use it ph34r.gif

AirdefMike- 05-11-2008
Jep, Nikkarit is an old one...guess that makes me an old fart too.

As how to translate it...well, "Crafters" I guess but don't ask me what's the story behind it. I'm not that old...or dead.

As the Lions for TF then...it comes from our old heraldic sign so you can blame the Swedes for that.

Personally I prefer Lion over reindeer any day...well, wolverine wouldn't be atcually that bad.

Little known fact:

Team Canada is actually a native term, which means (loosely translated):

"Team chosen by great gods of sky and ice to break ancient curse and bring glory to home nation!"

About the Finnish lions: If i recall, there was a lion that escaped from a zoo or something some years ago. So a lion in the woods somewhere in Finland was pretty funny. ihwcforums/flirting.gif

The name of the Swedish hockey-team "Tre Kronor" or Three Crowns was first used in the WC in 1938 in Prague. I´m not quite sure were the name originates from, but Swedens national heraldic symbol has been three crowns since the 1360s. The king in the 1330s (Magnus Eriksson) called himself "The king of Sweden, Norway and Skåne" (Skåne is now the south of Sweden). The 3 crowns were probably to symbolize these three countries.
Before the three crowns, Swedens national symbol was a lion (maybe the Finns took it from us back then wink.gif ).

Any more useless trivia I can participate with? smile.gif

Also, there are many nicknames of other countries in Russian, but these names are not so decorous as it used to be. They are not insults at all, no! But, these names just reflects each nation's feature. For example, the Swiss Team's called "Сыры" ("Syry" - "Cheese", Swiss' cheese is well known in Russia).
Team Latvia is called "Лабусы" ("Labusy", I'm not sure, but I suppose the "Labas Denas" means "Good Afternoon" in Latvian - comrades from Latvia will correct me if I was wrong)
Team Italy is called "Макароны" ("Makarony" - "Macaroni"). Eah! They like that! ))
Team Belarus is called "Бульбаши" ("Bulbashy" - "Potatoes"). These guys like it very much.
Team Denmark is called "Гамлеты" ("Hamlets") - no comment
I'd prefer not to write the nickname of team USA, because it may be insulting, IMHO! But, I suppose also, You know it well already. Anyway, I didn't want to insult anyone.

Actually, Italy is called "Макаронники" (Makaronniki - macaroni lovers).
And Bul'bashi means potato men. The word for potato is bul'ba and it is belorussian.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what happened biggrin.gif. England has lion symbols too, I think.

And hey:

It is a very sad thing that nowadays there is so little useless information.
