The name of the Swedish hockey-team "Tre Kronor" or Three Crowns was first used in the WC in 1938 in Prague. I´m not quite sure were the name originates from, but Swedens national heraldic symbol has been three crowns since the 1360s. The king in the 1330s (Magnus Eriksson) called himself "The king of Sweden, Norway and Skåne" (Skåne is now the south of Sweden). The 3 crowns were probably to symbolize these three countries.
Before the three crowns, Swedens national symbol was a lion (maybe the Finns took it from us back then wink.gif ).

Any more useless trivia I can participate with? smile.gif

The lion symbol is a part of the swedish Coats of arms. But then john III" duke of Finland and Karelia"1581. They created a new Coats of arms for the region of Finland.

And under it is curved Russian sabre beneath the lion's paws, thats reflection of the political situation at 1500. then sweden and russia was always in war.And imply that Sweden had the upper hand over their enemies.
And also in history you have "the Lion of the North" that came and save the germans from the Catholics in 1631.

But who will win finlandia vs Stolichnaya?

Personly i think Finlandia. They taste better

Yep, the lion symbol comes from sweden. A long, long time ago, there was a bear in the finnish coat of arms. But over the years the bear symbol was more and more associated with Russia (which we Finns never have felt part of, although being part of the Russian empire from 1808 to 1917), so we took the lion symbol.
If my memory serves me right, the lion symbol comes from a Swedish count, who was stationed in Finland at the time (the Swedes ruled Finland for over 700 years, from about 1100 to 1808).

In finnish lanquage, there is a lot of insulting names for other nations, and for our dear neighbours, the Swedes and Russians, we have plenty. Those are often in use(like it or not), mainly to build confidence in our own team. Ofcourse those names are not used in the media, but, for example in bars and such, where there are a lot of Finns watching a hockey game.

For those names being insulting, I won't list them here, for I don't wan't to upset anyone or cause a "beef" smile.gif

But I'm sure there are such names in any lanquage, so I shouldn't feel guilty, right?

sometimes, Russians call Canada Team "krasnye konoplyanye listiki", means: "red cannabis leafs" smile.gif.

and Finnish Team as "finiki" (name of dates/figs fruits in Russian), although Swedish Team as "vikings" or "yellow chickens" - depending on situation smile.gif

Smart decision ihwcforums/thumbsup.gif

And you are right, there are some insulting "confidence building" names in every language so you don't have to feel guilty wink.gif

Well the Swiss team hasn't really a nickname, we name our team just "Nati" what is the short form of "Nationalteam".

Haha, being Swedish with finnish friends i know some of those "not-so-nice"-names. Which mostly has a great deal to do with men whose not so... manly. I guess back in Finland you already know what most people in Sweden say about you too... Kippis!
Some kind of "love-hate" relation between two countries that (deep down) like each other pretty much, i think.
Anyhow:
Come on - beat Russia now!

I REALLY want a SWE-FIN game in this tournament. Otherwise, there´s almost no point in having a WC...

Sweden/Finland.....that has 'all male orgy' written all over it. Gross.

It think it´s better to keep the trash-talk to the SWE, CAN forums.
That said - Canada is like lumberjacks and mooses. That´s beyond gross. That´s scary.
