Ovechkin is a fine player but he's not even worthy of carrying #66's jock. The 87 CC TC would have wrapped up a 7 game series against the CCCP in 5 games. The 72 TC won the Summit Series on Russian ice.

Oh, and Vimy4 - "would have" is not exactly "did" I read something about statistics here recently, dryden was implying it's good to use stats sometimes to rebuff someone, do your math then if you started with 1972 and don't forget to include club series too, remember Scott Bowman saying "we cann't say which hockey is better until we play them on the club level", well he did ))

Ur Russian League was top heavy, really top heavy, in the 70's / 80's...( STILL IS to a lesser extent ) Moscow's Red Army ( ya ya ...CSKA -M ) won ...the Russian equivalent of the Stanley Cup ...year after year...EASILY...That Red Army team was pretty much CCCP , but when u sent Red Army overseas to play our club teams , u even augmented them with a few more top snipers , who weren't red army, but were CCCP...

This is very much an ' apples vs. oranges' argument...and dont forget too , that back in the 70's ...the NHL was further watered down by the rival WHA...

Hells bells, the WHA's Winnipeg Jets, led by Bobby Hull...crushed CCCP to the tune of 7-2 one time...

So what woulda happened if we sent our best NHL + WHA stars, to play ur club teams eh ? Everyone save Red Army...woulda got slaughtered !

and au contraire..........................since 1972 we clearly have shown we are better then Russia..................................most especially since Russia can't send playing together all year round teams of all stars against rag tag groups of put together "b" teams and college kids from Canada anymore.

Now that Russia has to play by the same rules and realties as we had to...................Canada has been shown to clearly be the better hockey nation and players.

There isn't a knowledgeble hockey observer that wouldn''t admit that to being the truth................the results prove it beyond any grain of dispute.

Your last post which contains the typical Russian refusal to acknowledge obvious truth born of results shows you exactly the type of dis-respect i am talking about.

Time to give some well earned respect to Canadian hockey Russia fans...............................we've proven time and time again we are better then you guys in this game.

You may be pretty skaters but theres a hell of a lot more to this game then that.

i would have so loved to have had our best playing together year round like those old CCCP teams.......................................we would have won 80% of all the games.

The old CCCP(as much as i admired their team play level) was a myth, a manafactured construction that Canada could have produced and produced at a higher level any day of the week if we had wanted to run things that way.

Come on, after the last game of the 1972 Series, even after this unexpected loss, one Russian player (Anisin) went to the Canadian locker room and gave personally to Esposito (Phil, the one who hates Soviets and Russians so much, but was an excellent player) a special cup they made. I wonder how many guys would be able to show respect and admiration of the adversary's skills right after a pretty bad loss?
